We're moving!!

Blogger is becoming more and more of an albatross to deal with, and try as I might, I cannot get the comment function to resurrect itself.

I am trying to decide between wikispace and wordpress as the next host for this blog. My hope is to get the new site up and running before December.

Once I have a new URL, I'll post it here and then change the link on the Lowery site after I make sure the new site is working properly.

Until then, you can reach me at shelly_holmes at allenisd dot org.

20-24 octubre 2008

My apologies for not updating the site last week! I was knee-deep (literally!) in PSAT documents until Friday afternoon!

This week:

Pre-AP/IB Spanish I

Monday: Plural forms of adjectives with ser, describing more than one person, adjective agreement, question words. (We're going to wait on definite articles until later in the six weeks!)

Wednesday: Quiz over Monday's material. Review for exam over 2-1.

Friday: 2-1 Exam.

Spanish I

Tuesday: Describing more than one person. Review for exam Thursday.

05 October 2008

6 octubre-10 octubre, 2008

I just made the calendar for this six weeks and all I can say is hang on for the ride.

Pre-AP/IB Spanish I
I'm out on Tuesday. You'll have a sub, but I'll be in the building and will come to your classes when they start. You'll be doing a lot of rather pedantic (SAT word!) things to get you ready for the weeks ahead: setting up your new carpeta, copying two sections of vocab into said carpeta, setting up your timed writing journals, and taking down the new workbook assignment. ("Taking down" as in writing the info somewhere, not "taking down" as in annihilation.)

On Thursday we'll review 2-1 vocab and go into describing yourself and others, gender/adjective agreement, and glory hallelujah we'll finally be able to speak to each other about something besides how we're doing!

Spanish I
Monday-- email addresses and forms of ser; set up new carpeta and start on 2-1 vocab!

Wednesday-- describing yourself and others

Friday-- quiz over ser; gender/adjective agreement

27 September 2008

29 septiembre-3 octubre, 2008

We've nearly made it through the first six weeks of school! Unbelievable!

This week in Pre-AP/IB Spanish I:

Monday: Review for Wednesday's exam. Go back over ser and time. Learn how to ask for and give email addresses. I still need composition books from a few of you, and four of you still need to recite the Spanish alphabet.

Wednesday: WORKBOOKS DUE. EXAM over the second half of Chapter 1.

Friday: SPANISH CULTURE ASSIGNMENT DUE. See the "what if" grade spreadsheet on the patio door if you're wondering what the outcome will be if you DON'T do this assignment.

This week in Spanish 1:

Tuesday: Review for exam over pronouns, time, days, date, months, and numbers.

Thursday: Exam

21 September 2008

22-26 septiembre, 2008

Good news! Summer has officially ended as of today!

THIS WEEK

Spanish I:
Monday: Go back over numbers and pronouns, learn to tell time.
Wednesday: Continue time, learn days/months/seasons/how to write the date/ask for the date
Friday: Quiz over time and pronouns, learn forms of ser.

Pre-AP/IB Spanish I
Tuesday: Quiz over time. Time worksheet due. Discuss Spanish culture assignment. Learn days/months/seasons/how to write the date/ask for the date
Thursday: SOURCES DUE for Spanish culture assignment. This is worth ten points of the rubric for the assignment. Remember: I do not want a "list" of sources. One or two is fine. And I will be checking them, so make sure web addresses/book titles are accurate. On Thursday we will also be taking a quiz over time, and learning the forms of the verb "ser".

Have a GREAT WEEK!

14 September 2008

15-19 September, 2008

Pre-AP/IB Spanish I

Monday- Discuss exams. You'll be able to see them, but not keep them. After that we'll hear the alphabet from a few more people, I'll take comp books from those who brought them, and we'll talk about subject pronouns/word order in sentences/using "no" in negative sentences.

Wednesday- Alphabet and comp books, numbers 0-31, asking for and giving phone numbers, asking for and giving email addresses, begin telling time.

Friday- Quiz. Alphabet and comp books, continue time.

Spanish I

Tuesday- Exam over the first part of Chapter 1. Maps are due today; 7th period will also complete pages 1 and 2 of their workbooks. 7th period will also complete the first-of-school questionnaire that we did not get to last week!

Thursday- Return exams. Subject pronouns, word order in sentences, sentences with "no" in them.

Have a great week!

07 September 2008

8-12 septiembre, 2008

This week we're having an exam over the first part of Chapter 1 (greetings, introductions, goodbyes), plus colors, countries and capitals, and classroom phrases.

Pre-AP/IB students: your Spanish culture assignment will also be given to you this week, and I will continue to hear your alphabet recitations daily.

This is the 3rd week of the six weeks, so progress reports will go out next week... which will include your quiz and tests grades up to that point.

The Pre-AP/IB Support Center, located in the LiveWire computer lab at the north end (by the auditorium) of the building, opens Monday, September 8. The center is available for any student enrolled in an advanced course. We have all kinds of office supplies to help you with projects and assignments, and the center is staffed with Pre-AP/IB teachers. There are 28 computers available for you to use there, also.

The center is open every morning from 7:15-8:10, and every afternoon from 3:30-4:30. A late bus runs every day but Friday.

Have a great week!

30 August 2008

1ยบ septiembre-5 septiembre, 2008

This week we'll have a quiz over classroom phrases, continue practicing the alphabet, and learn greetings/responses/introductions as part of a conversation.

You'll also need to start working on your countries/capitals maps. Pre-AP/IB students: you do not need to color your maps. I will not be grading them. However, you DO need to complete the maps because they will help you learn the locations of the countries. You will be responsible for all of the countries and capitals on your first exam.

You may want to copy the alphabet into your carpeta... not required, but certainly advisable!

If you haven't purchased a composition book, you need to do that. I'll start collecting them next week and will store them in my room for our first timed writing at the beginning of the 2nd six weeks.

Hope you are enjoying Lowery! The first week of 9th grade is always a challenge, but by now you've figured out where your classes are, what lunch you have, and what you need to do to be prepared each day.

Have a wonderful week!

Nearly Time!

Here's the latest news from Happy Spanish Land/Lowery:

We'll run a modified schedule the first 2 days of school. You'll attend 1st-8th periods both Monday and Tuesday, with A/B schedule commencing Wednesday.

For the first 2 days of school in my class, all you'll need is something to write with. You'll be receiving many school documents that your parents need to sign, so you might want to bring a folder or a backpack with you as well.

For the first TWO days of school, lunch will run through your 5th period class. For the rest of the year, it will run through 3rd and 6th period.

The building looks fantastic! The workers are finishing last-minute details, but classrooms are set up and ready to go. We're excited for the year to begin, and hope you are as well!
